Biking on a Sunday morning

Most people would say, they would spend their Sunday morning sleeping in… But that is not going to be able to get me 500 words for this, so I will tell you about my Sunday.
My Sundays begin very early, 5 am to be exact. I wake up and get ready for a nice long bike ride. I put on my shorts and jersey and my dad drives down to either Wild Bills, or out near Marpi next to the go-cart arena. Once arrive at our appointed destination, we decide where to ride for the day. We have been recently been going the third leg of the Hell of the Marianas. Which, is down radar station, out and up to suicide, down to bird island look out, down to grotto, and out back to Bonsai, but we added an extra piece where we climb up Radar station hill in the start.
When you go up such challenging hills, it’s good to not be afraid of shifting constantly, I’m always shifting when I decide to attack a hill and speed up it as fast as I can. It takes me 20 minutes by mountain bike to get up Radar station hill, the last time I checked. But my best time was 17 minutes on my road bike, and that is a huge difference to my standards. But I can see where my 3 minutes are gained when I ride my mountain bike. One is that my mountain bike weights about 7-10 lbs heavier than my road bike. In Lance Armstrong’s book he wrote that even half a pound will make a huge difference when you are climbing up hills. Another thing is, the wheels on my road bike are much thinner and have a smaller surface area of resistance to get up those hills as well, compared to my mountain bike, which has a greater resistance surface area.
One thing that is really good to do when you are riding long distance is to keep drinking and snack a lot. An average biker can go through at least a gallon of water on a 2 hour bike ride, if I recall correctly. Snacking is also important; it doesn’t matter as long as it’s a bit healthy. When I rode with some of the most elite bikers on island, they took me on the whole hell of the Marianas one day and I came back shaking because I did not have the right amount of calories to keep me going on that ride. They said I didn’t eat enough and that next time I should just bring a bunch of power bars and gels. The gels that I prefer and the Accel Gels (bought at Brabu next to sushi land) they are very delicious and taste like candy.
That concludes my blog for today, my next post may contain more information on biking, but as of now it is time for me to go, thank you for reading.
Ride strong
